There is plenty in the world of Lego that is mind blowing, but nothing comes even close to this full 1:1 scale reproduction of the X-Wing. At 5,335,200 bricks, it matches up to its real-life counterpart for size and weighs more than 20,000 Kg.

The model is a gigantic reproduction of Lego’s classic X-wing set and will be making an appearance in New York’s Times Square over the next few days. Unlike its smaller counterpart, this scale model allows you to sit inside and even has engines that glow and roar just like the X-Wing would from the movies.

Even the interior is recreated accurately, so you can re-live that classic Death Star bombing run scene all from the comfort of your Lego X-Wing. Produced by Lego in the Czech Republic, the model is built to withstand transportation using a clever steel internal infrastructure. Who knows, it might eventually make a trip to the UK.

Apart from the astonishing weight, the sheer scale of the X-Wing is also unbelievable. It has a wing span of 44 ft and measures 11ft in height. The model took around 4 months to build and was put together by a team of 32 builders.

If you fancy seeing more pictures of the X-Wing in action, Lego has a large gallery of images over on its Facebook page.

Earlier this month, we heard word that the US Department of Defense would be approving Samsung and Apple devices for use with Pentagon employees and other military and Defense Department personnel. Samsung gained approval first, and now Apple devices have gotten security clearance, allowing even more options to choose from when it comes to choosing a device to use at the Pentagon.

Bloomberg reports that Apple devices running iOS 6 or higher can be used, including the iPhone and iPad. Previously, the US Department of Defense approved Samsung devices earlier this month, as well as BlackBerry devices running BlackBerry 10. This makes Apple the third company to get security clearance at the Pentagon.

The recent approvals are expected to give BlackBerry a fight for government market share, a sector that BlackBerry has controlled for a long time now. With Apple and Samsung devices making their way into the Pentagon, it could spell even more trouble for the Canadian company, who has already been struggling in a world dominated by iOS and Android.

With the adoption of iPads alone, the US Air Force says they expect to save $50 million over 10 years, mostly due to the dropped weight of flight bags in planes in favor of lightweight iPads that would contain all of the flight manuals needed. American Airlines recently gaine approval for this same thing, so it makes sense that it would expand to the Air Force as well.

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 was approved earlier this month, and thanks to its new Knox security features, the US Department of Defense thinks that the new device is ready for Pentagon prime time, beating the iPhone and iPad to the punch, although that probably won?t stop iOS devices from being handed out as much as Samsung handsets. Either way, prepare for BlackBerry to lose a little grip in the government sector as Apple and Samsung are making their way inside.

Digg CEO Andrew McLaughlin talked about his company’s forthcoming Google Reader replacement on Wednesday while on stage at Internet Week New York, and he notably clarified that it is called “Digg Reader” and will not be a standalone, seperate app.

Digg, a social news website, announced plans in March to build an RSS reader, following news that Google would kill off its Google Reader on 1 July. Digg, at the time, said its RSS product would be available in the near future with Google Reader’s best features and API.

McLaughlin said Digg Reader will be “one download, which is Digg, and the current Digg will have added onto it reader capabilities.? The Digg team further revealed in a blog post last month that the beta of Digg Reader will be available in June, and the company previously hinted it would focus on simplicity, speed, synchronisation, and the ability to import.

READ: Digg’s upcoming Google Reader replacement will enter beta in June

Digg has a lot of experience in the web aggregation sector. In 2010, Betaworks, which later acquired Digg, had a product called News.me that aimed to deliver news in a digestible format. When it purchased Digg, Betawork took News.me’s features and blended it into the social news website.

McLaughlin said Digg wants to “build something that?s very clean, very simple and very fast,” and he even dubbed Digg Reader a ?production tool? that will be able to sort and rank content.

As for the recently acquired Instapaper, McLaughlin said it will not be combined into Digg Reader as of yet – mostly because its purpose is for users to read something later rather than immediately. Check out more of the interview at Livestream.

While BlackBerry 10.1 is still in beta stages, that’s not stopping the Canada-based BlackBerry from getting to work on the following version. BlackBerry Product Manager, Michael Clewley, shared changes that BlackBerry 10.2 will bring when speaking to CrackBerry.

Clewley says you’ll be able to set a time to remember an item, send Emojis in messages, set multiple alarms, and receive ”level 1 notifications.” The executive was light on exact details or other features, but we appreciate the tease.

The new features are set to hit in the BlackBerry 10.2 beta SDK in June and in a release to the masses by the end of 2013.

As for BlackBerry 10.1, betas have suggested we’ll see HDR photo options, new help demos upon first boot for new users, ability to turn off alerts for specific apps, BlackBerry World coupon redemption, and the ability to paste phone numbers right into the phone application. No word on a release, but it can’t be too far off.

Bungie Releases New Trailer For Upcoming Destiny Game

Bungie already announced Destiny, a new first person shooter game that is going to be released for both Xbox and PlayStation. Destiny has been slated for release in 2014 and it has been confirmed that the game will be compatible with future consoles as well. The newly revealed Xbox One and Sony?s PlayStation 4 will be getting this game, both of these consoles are expected to be released later this year. The story line of Destiny is not known, no details about the gameplay are available as yet. Bungie has a ?worldwide gameplay reveal? scheduled for 10th June, at Sony?s E3 press conference, so additional details about the game aren?t that far off.

Today Bungie released a new Destiny trailer that it has created with the likes of Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad fame and the director of Iron Man, Jon Favreau. The teaser trailer tells little about the game, though its definitely worth taking a look at. There are high expectations from Bungie for this game, considering that it already has the credit for the highly successful Halo games trilogy under its belt.

Independent game developers who are excited about selling new games on the Xbox One got some bad news on Wednesday. Microsoft confirmed to ShackNews that independent developers cannot self-publish their own games on Xbox Live Arcade, and are instead required to partner with Microsoft Game Studios or a third-party publisher. The policy is completely different from those employed by Sony and Nintendo. Sony embraces independent developers and welcomes them to create and self-publish content on the PlayStation Network. Microsoft?s upcoming console matches up with Sony?s PlayStation 4 on paper, however there are still some questions that have been left unanswered, such as the ability to play used games.

Today, Google announced that it would be killing Google Reader as of July 1st, 2013. I really can?t believe I?m typing this. I?ve been an AVID Google Reader user for as long as I can remember. I?m still in shock.

When I built my own website, Symbian-Guru.com, it was because all of the sites IN MY GOOGLE READER weren?t reporting what I wanted them to. When Symbian-Guru.com rose to one of the top Symbian-related blogs on the Internet, it was because of my Google Reader ? I had subscribed to feeds that my competitors didn?t, so I found out about news faster. I protected my OPML file as though it was a competitive advantage.

I still use Google Reader ? it?s literally my homepage, and easily the most often-visited site on my browser history. It?s the first thing I look at in the morning and the last thing I look at before I go to sleep. In 2009, I had over 350 feeds, and developed a really efficient way to plow through those within a few minutes.

Today, I don?t run a tech blog, I manage Social Media at RadioShack, but my Google Reader is still my favorite place on the Internet. It?s crucial for me to keep up with the latest information across nearly 250 different news outlets, and as you can see, I engage heavily with this content.

Google Reader

I don?t know what?s worse ? the fact that Google is killing it, or the terrible suggestions that people who don?t use it have. Let?s clear a few of those up real quick:

1. First and foremost, NO social network can replace Google Reader ? I use Google Reader specifically because of how it is DESIGNED. Its literally a river of news. I don?t want to see your monstrous header image, nor do I want to see a bunch of hashtags around the headline. I want to see news, and I ONLY want to see the news that I haven?t seen yet. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, none of them do this. They all focus on big graphics, and none of them let me ?mark as read? to get it out of my view.

2. Second, it?s in the cloud, and it?s always in sync, no matter what platform I?m on. Desktop, mobile, app, browser, doesn?t matter ? Google Reader was always there, and always in sync with me.

3. Third, don?t tell me that Google didn?t make any money off Google Reader. Google Reader gave Google EXACTLY what Facebook pretends to know about me ? my *real* interests. Google Reader knows what I?m subscribed to, how long I?ve been subscribed to it, and how often I skim past that news source, or how often I stop to read it. It knows how often I star, or save for later, and article, and it knows if/when I share said article. That?s really powerful stuff, and it?s something that Facebook has thus far unsuccessfully tried to emulate.

I honestly don?t know what to do at this point. Obviously I?ll have to find another solution. But it still hurts. I?m still in shock.

In the meantime, go sign these petitions. I did.

Nokia Asha Charme

The Nokia Asha Touch range of smartphones has been a big success all over the world since they were first released last summer.

One country where the people have taken the phones to their hearts is in Russia, where, for the six months after launch, the Nokia Asha 311 was consistently the number one, top-selling device at its price point (4,990 roubles, about 125 euros) and in the top 3 of all smartphones sold by volume.

There are several factors why Asha Touch has proved so popular in Russia: clever marketing, the launch of special ?Nokia Charme? editions, 40 free EA Games and of course, the inherent features and brilliance of the devices themselves.

In an interview with Conversations, Irina Nechaeva, Nokia Russia?s head of marketing says:

?The key to our success is that it?s a very affordable and easy-to-use smartphone.?

?In Russia there is a very big percentage of feature phone users who aspire to own a smartphone but have limited budgets so they are concerned that it would be too difficult to switch.

?Also, the Nokia brand is still quite important in our market, so a smartphone from Nokia was a big driver.?

The Russian market

Irina told me that as of February 2013, Russia?s mobile phones market consisted of 39% smartphones and 61% in mobile phones. Clearly, that leaves a lot of people who are still eager to experience their first touchscreen smartphone.

From the beginning, Asha Touch devices were positioned as entry-level smartphones in Russia. The slogan for the campaign was  a Russian phrase with a double meaning: affordable and easy to use:

??? ?????????? ???? ?????????

This slogan turned out to be ?perfect? for the campaign.

?Asha consumers in Russia are a bit older and are first-time smartphone buyers. A lot of them fear that if they buy a smartphone, it will be too difficult to use. Of course, when they use a Nokia Asha it is really easy,? says Irina.

The Russian Nokia Asha project team of 12 also found clever ways of making the devices visible to large audiences, such as the Nokia Asha 311 being regularly used in a popular TV shows, like ?Dom 2? and ?Big dances?.

Nokia Asha Charme

Nokia Charme

Another innovative approach that has contributed to the strong momentum behind Asha Touch in Russia was the introduction of Nokia Asha Charme.

These are special editions of the Nokia Asha 311, the Asha 308 and Asha 309, decorated in a pretty floral pattern of chrysanthemums aimed directly at women.

The pattern on the cover of the phone is complemented with additional elements such as special screensavers, wallpapers and pre-loaded, local social networks.

The availability of Nokia Asha Charme smartphones coincided with Women?s Day in Russia, when it is traditional for men to buy women flowers and nice gifts. What could be nicer than a new smartphone?

Successful and important

The Asha Charme initiative ? designed and managed entirely by the local team in Russia ?  has been a big success, with the potential to also be in used in China and other Asian countries.

Asha Touch isn?t just popular in Russia, but it?s important, too.

Many people buying Asha Touch smartphones will be connecting to the mobile Internet for the first time. This opens up a world of new possibilities and experiences for every Nokia Asha owner in Russia.

google-drive

Google Drive has seen a nice little update today, and some of you will probably dig the new UI layout. Just like our other Google applications, they have updated the UI to represent the Google Now card layout. Swiping and using gestures have now been emphasized in this new update, and you will also be given the option to download a copy of the file for when you are offline.

Probably the best feature added in this update, is the ability to scan documents into PDF format. Google Drive will now be able to snap a photo with your device?s camera, then convert the characters to a PDF file to make life a little bit easier for us. You will now be able to adjust text fonts, add color, adjust sizes, and you will have alignment options for better formatting. Finally, they have added cloud printing support for wireless printing. You will now be able to print out a document without having to resort to your desktop or laptop.

So if you have not updated your Google Drive yet, get in there and do so. If you have not tried out the awesome app, then now is the time to check it out. Let us know how much you like the update.

iBooksCategories

iBooksCategories

Is your iBooks library starting to outgrow those beautiful skeuomorphic wooden bookshelves that Apple provided for you? Have you purchased way too many Star Wars novels, only to find them crowding out your beloved Jane Eyre collection?

Well, there?s a simple way to manage an epic, ever-growing iBook collection, of course (why else would I be writing this), and here?s how.

First of all, decide what categories make the most sense for you, based on the books you own. Should you categorize by genre, subject matter, have a list of favorites? It?s up to you, and you can of course create categories for anything, like ?books my mom likes,? or ?books that no one should ever see me reading, but that I love anyway.? Ahem.

Once you decide, then, head on over to your iOS device and tap the ?Collections? button (on an iPad) the ?Books? button on an iPhone or iPod touch. You can then create your own collections by tapping the ?New? button, or edit the collection names you?ve already created by tapping on the (duh) ?Edit? button. The default categories are Books and PDFs. You can be more creative than that, right? Of course you can.

Once you?ve created the categories, it?s time to start organizing your books. Return to your shelves and tap the Edit button in the upper right hand corner of the iPad screen, or the upper left hand corner of your iPhone or iPod Touch screen. Tap all the books on the shelves that you want to move to the new category, then tap the ?Move? button. Notice that you?ll have another chance to create new categories and edit the names here as well.

That?s all there is to it! Enjoy your new bookshelves, and be sure to share with us your interesting (and humorous) categories in the comments below.

Vimeo

iOS 6 came with some social integration built in, Twitter and Facebook, and if the latest rumors turn out to be correct we could be looking at social photo and video integration in iOS 7. The rumor points towards the recently revamped Flickr and video sharing service Vimeo coming on board. The story comes by way of 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman:

“Both Flickr and Vimeo will now also be integrated deeply into the new operating system, so users will be able to sign into the respective networks via iOS 7?s built-in Settings application. Like with iOS?s Facebook and Twitter ties, Apple customers will be able to log-in one time into each social network and have full sharing access.”

Presumably that would also mean that as with Twitter and Facebook, other third-party apps would be able to hook into Flickr and Vimeo by way of an instant log in. It’s important to remember also, as the source points out, that any feature currently in testing could still be removed prior to the release of iOS 7. Interesting stuff, for sure. Does either of these two social options get you excited?
